Using INFOGRAPHICS to Engage Students in Informational Texts
To address Common Core and other high-level State Standards, teachers in all content areas must improve students’ reading and writing of informational texts without sacrificing attention to content skills. Infographics—an emerging Internet genre that employs visual and textual rhetoric to inform and persuade—can excite students’ interests in informational text while also helping them to “distill” information, presenting main ideas and supportive evidence in a streamlined, logical manner. This workshop will guide participants through methods for critically reading and composing Infographics (applying them to all content areas), provide professional and student-created examples, assessment opportunities and present and explore online tools for creating them.
As Angela, a recent workshop participant said, "I look forward to using infographs next year as performance task assessments. They would be a great way to assess the students' cumulative knowledge at the completion of each unit. "
The workshop can be conducted with or without technology (in a computer lab on any platform or BYOD, using participants’ laptops).
